Step By Step Guide To Going Cruelty Free

Going cruelty free can be daunting for some people, but I assure you, it’s not as scary as you might think. In fact, the only scary thing about it is the fact the makeup you already own has contributed to the torture and death of thousands of innocent animals. Time to change that I think!

Firstly you need to decide what you’re going to do with all your old makeup, you have a few options. You can either use it up quietly and then replace it, this way you aren’t just wasting what you already own. Or you can give it away to friends/family/shelters, others can benefit from what you no longer use. Last option is to just throw it all away, I’d recommend trying to give it away or sell it before you consider just throwing it though.

Do your research, when I first went cruelty free there wasn’t much information out there for me to learn from. I had maybe 1 YouTuber who was also newly cruelty free and the trusty Logical Harmony website. Now though, you have countless social influencers who are cruelty free and many vegan as well! There’s also a tonne of Facebook groups and trusted blogs and organisations to help you on your way.

I recommend downloading a trusted cruelty free list onto your phone screen so you can look at it quickly and easily when you’re at the shops so you don’t panic and buy an old non-cruelty free brand instead.

Replace your basics first, don’t get overwhelmed because it’s a lot to take in at once so don’t worry if you start slow. I started by replacing all my basic makeup first, foundation, concealer, mascara, lipstick and eyeshadows. As each one ran out I bought a cruelty free replacement.

After finally replacing ALL my makeup I moved on to skincare, toiletries and cleaning products. Even after being cruelty free for 3+ years I’m still finding things I had no idea were tested on animals. So please don’t get upset if you slip up or realise everything you own is probably not cruelty free, it’s a journey.

Once you’ve done all the above, keep going! Keep educating yourself and stay up to date with new cruelty free brands or old cruelty free brands going back to animal testing. Talk to fellow cruelty free people and remember the positive impact you are now having on all these animals who suffer for beauty.
